We have a music specialist who will provide classes with a 45-minute music lesson each week, focusing on singing; playing instruments (including steel pans, ukuleles, keyboards and glockenspiels); and creating music through composition and improvisation. Children will also learn to listen to music critically, read music notation, explore different styles and traditions, and understand how music has changed over time. Both Oak and Olive will have music on Wednesdays.

Home Learning Menus and Reading Expectations

At Lower Farm, we expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week with an adult who can question children and help further develop the skills taught in school.

By Year 4, all children should have mastery of all times tables up to 12 x 12. Please continue to work on these with children as it is important to their mathematical fluency. Children in Year 4 will also participate in the statutory times table check. This check requires children to be tested on their knowledge of times tables where they are given 25 randomised questions and have 6 seconds to answer each question. This check occurs around June time.

In addition to reading and times tables, your class teacher will send home a half termly ‘Home Learning Menu’. Your children can choose activities that interest and engage whilst furthering the learning taking place in school.

11 Before 11 Promises

“11 Before 11” is an initiative by the REAch2 Academy Trust, designed to ensure that every child experiences a rich and memorable primary education beyond the core curriculum. It’s a set of 11 promises – unique, character-building experiences – that every child in a REAch2 school is entitled to complete before they leave primary school at age 11. These experiences are designed to:

  • Inspire ambition
  • Build confidence
  • Encourage curiosity
  • Foster resilience
  • Create lifelong memories

In Year 4, we will be taking part in the Royal Ballet & Opera House Create Day 26′. This exciting opportunity links with our ‘Culture Vulture’ 11 before 11 promise, and the children will be involved in a range of creative activities throughout the day.  We’ll be capturing lots of photos and videos to share their experiences.

Also in Year 4, the children will be participating in ‘Hiking Heroes’ where we will be exploring some of the local area.

Trips, Visits and Experiences

Along with our 11 before 11 offer, we will be going on a few trips, welcoming experts into our school and supporting our learning with a variety of fantastic experiences. This year, we will be visiting Tamworth Castle and Cadburys World. Alongside these two amazing trips, we also have other fun and exciting opportunities throughout the year.

The table below gives further details, including the cost of futures trips to allow better planning.

When Where About the trip/visitor Approximate Cost Breakdown
Spring Term Tamworth Castle Tamworth Castle is an experience that links closely to the topic of invaders and settlers in Britain. With its Saxon origins and later Norman influence, the castle provides a real-life setting to explore how different groups, such as the Anglo-Saxons and Normans, shaped British history. Interactive exhibits and historical reenactments help bring this period to life, giving the children a deeper understanding of how invaders and settlers lived, defended their land, and influenced the culture of Britain. Approx £20
Summer Term

Cadburys world Year 4 will be visiting Cadburys World as it is a fantastic destination for a school trip as it provides an engaging and interactive way to explore the origins of chocolate, which links directly to the ancient Maya civilisation, which is our History topic in the summer term. The Maya was among the first people to cultivate cacao and used it in religious ceremonies and everyday life, making this trip a great opportunity to bring history to life. Through exhibits and workshops, the children will discover how chocolate has evolved from Maya times to the present day, deepening their understanding of both history and food production Approx £20
Summer Term Lower Farm Academy We will be taking part in a local walk around the River Anker, as part of our Geography topic ‘what are rivers and how are they used?’. Alongside the walk, the children will be actively looking for different geographical features and making notes of these, as well as completing observational drawings. £0

Lower Farm Academy Year 4 will be taking part in the Royal Ballet & Opera House Create Day 26′.
