We have a music specialist who will provide classes with a 45-minute music lesson each week, focusing on singing; playing instruments (including steel pans, ukuleles, keyboards and glockenspiels); and creating music through composition and improvisation. Children will also learn to listen to music critically, read music notation, explore different styles and traditions, and understand how music has changed over time. Holly class will have music on Wednesdays and Hazel class will have music on Thursdays.

Home Learning Menus and Reading Expectations

At Lower Farm, we expect children to read a minimum of 3 times a week with an adult who can question children and help further develop the skills taught in school.

By Year 3, all children should have mastery of 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, and 8 times tables. Please continue to work on these with children as it is important to their mathematical fluency.

In addition to reading and times tables, your class teacher will send home a half termly ‘Home Learning Menu’. Your children can choose activities that interest and engage whilst furthering the learning taking place in school.

11 Before 11 Promises

“11 Before 11” is an initiative by the REAch2 Academy Trust, designed to ensure that every child experiences a rich and memorable primary education beyond the core curriculum. It’s a set of 11 promises – unique, character-building experiences – that every child in a REAch2 school is entitled to complete before they leave primary school at age 11. These experiences are designed to:

  • Inspire ambition
  • Build confidence
  • Encourage curiosity
  • Foster resilience
  • Create lifelong memories

In Year 3, we will 11 before 11- Caring Campaigners

As part of our 11 before 11 promise-Caring Campaigners initiative, the children will be taking part in a local walk to the duck pond to carry out a litter pick. This activity helps reinforce the importance of looking after our environment and taking pride in our local community. Through this hands-on experience, the children will learn how small actions, like picking up litter can make a big difference in protecting wildlife and keeping our shared spaces clean and safe.

Trips, Visits and Experiences

Along with our 11 before 11 offer, we will be going on a number of trips, welcoming experts into our school and supporting our learning with a variety of fantastic experiences. We’re excited to share some of the fantastic trips and experiences your child will take part in during their time in Year 3. This year, the children will visit Lunt Roman Fort as part of our History topic “Why did the Romans invade and settle in Britain?”, where they’ll explore a real Roman site and learn what life was like for Roman soldiers. As part of our Geography learning, the children will take part in two exciting Virtual Reality (VR) experiences—one exploring volcanoes and why people live near them, and another discovering Antarctica and the animals and scientists who live there. We’re also looking forward to a visit from poet Andy Tooze, who will inspire the children through an interactive poetry workshop.

To support our 11 Before 11 promise, pupils will take part in a litter pick around the local area, showing care for their community and environment.

The table below gives further details, including the cost of futures trips to allow better planning.

Autumn             Term Lower Farm Academy As part of our Geography learning, we have been exploring the question: Why do people live near volcanoes? To bring this topic to life, the children will be taking part in an exciting Virtual Reality (VR) experience. Through VR, pupils will have the chance to explore volcanic landscapes and understand both the risks and benefits of living near volcanoes—such as rich soil for farming, geothermal energy, and unique tourism opportunities. This immersive session will help deepen their understanding of natural environments and the choices people make about where they live. Free

Term

Lower Farm Academy As part of our Geography learning, we are exploring the question: “Who lives in Antarctica?” To support this topic, the children will be taking part in an exciting Virtual Reality (VR) experience. Using VR headsets, pupils will be transported to the icy landscapes of Antarctica, where they’ll explore the environment, learn about the incredible animals that live there—such as penguins, seals, and whales—and discover how scientists live and work in such extreme conditions.

This immersive experience will help the children develop a deeper understanding of life in one of the most remote and challenging parts of our planet.
